On Tuesday night, Andrei Svechnikov did what had been done only one other time in the history of the NHL when he scored a “lacrosse-style” goal from behind the net for the Carolina Hurricanes. Enter Svechnikov. With the game tied 2-2 midway through the second period, Svechnikov gathered the puck along the boards and headed behind the Winnipeg net. Once situated directly behind Jets netminder Connor Hellebuyck, the 19-year-old Svechnikov scooped the puck onto his stick and deftly placed it over Hellebuyck’s right shoulder. It was a near carbon copy of the goal Svechnikov scored against the Calgary Flames earlier in the season, and on Tuesday it served as a rallying point for his team as the Hurricanes scored four straight goals to eventually win 6-3 — with the teenager’s jaw-dropping marker the catalyst.
